Robert A. Desharnais, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biology and Director of the Virtual Courseware Project at California State University, Los Angeles. Under his leadership, the Virtual Courseware Project has produced 21 interactive web-based simulations for biology and earth science education that have been used by over five million students around the world. Several of these applications have received critical acclaim and have been highlighted in magazines and journals such as Natural History, the Chronicle of Higher Education and Science. In 2006 Desharnais received the Quality Education for Minorities Richard Nicholson Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. His work on web-based curriculum development has been supported by grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation and the California State University.
