The MERLOT Africa Network (MAN) Council is proud to announce the First Africa Forum on Open Educational Resources (OER) to be held during the eLearning Africa Conference 2008 in Accra, Ghana - West Africa on May 28-30, 2008 . The Forum themes focus on (1) Global Awareness about OER, (2) Universal Access for all to high quality teaching and learning resources, (3) Equal access through internationalization of resources with multi-language capabilities and (4) Research and OER Global Communities of Practices. |

FORUM EVENTS |
All Day Forum on

The MAN OER Forum will feature five components:
1. Keynotes and lectures (9:00 – 11:30 am)
In this introductory sessions four MAN invited speakers will present best practices on OER development, deployment and research as well as developments in OA.
2. Building Awareness (11:30 - 12:00)
Why OER? How can OER help my institution develop eLearning programs? How can I get faculties and communities involved?
Luncheon and Keynote Speaker (12:00 -2:00 pm)
3. Workshop (2:00 -5:00 pm)
“Making the MERLOT Repository and Community part of your eLearning endeavours - Opportunities for higher education in Africa.” Workshop Participants will become familiar with how to use the MERLOT eLearning repository and how to be part of its Community. A primary aim of this workshop is to enable participants to develop plans to integrate MERLOT in their institutional/organizational eLearning programs.

4. OER Special Focus Session and Publication
MAN will organise a Special Focus Session on OER Research and Development and Case Studies. Papers will be selected through a review process. Track proceedings will be documented in a special issue of the MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) .

MAN encourages eLearning practitioners to submit an abstract of their contributions for an eLearning Africa Special Focus Session on OER by January 2008 on the following themes:
- OER Research and Development
- Digital Repository
- Improving Quality of Learning with Electronic Resources
- OER Case Studies
This session will be both in English and French. Those making a successful application for inclusion in the OER Special Focus Session will be offered a significantly reduced eLearning Africa conference registration fee.

MAN will institute a “MAN-eLearning Africa exemplary practice Award”. This will recognize and give awards to exemplary OER (learning resources) and Community of Practices (Community that support OER research and development). MERLOT has already established a peer review protocol for selecting best practices. MAN will modify the protocol to include criteria of OER internationalization such as Multilanguage support and accessibility. |

About the MERLOT AFRICA Network (MAN):
The MERLOT AFRICA Network (MAN) is a Network of African higher education institutions affiliated with the MERLOT. The MAN organization works collaboratively with MERLOT partner institutions to conduct educational research that leads to best practices in the scholarship of teaching and learning using electronic resources. MAN also strives to enhance the usability and quality of the MERLOT eLearning repository for global access. |

MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) is the largest higher education network for user-centred, searchable collection of peer reviewed, higher education, online learning materials created by registered members, and offers a set of faculty development support services. MERLOT's vision is to be a premiere online community where faculty, staff, and students from around the world share their learning materials and pedagogy. MERLOT's strategic goal is to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning by increasing the quantity and quality of peer reviewed online learning materials that can be easily incorporated into faculty designed courses.

GLOBE (Global Learning Object Brokerage Exchange) is an alliance established among five international global repositories including MERLOT in the U.S, ARIADNE (Alliance of Remote Instructional Authoring and Distribution Networks of Europe) in Europe, Education Network Australia (EdNA Online) in Australia, LORNET (Learning Object Repository Research Network) in Canada and National Institute of Multimedia Education (NIME) in Japan. Federated community search is provided through the MERLOT repository that enables users to query GLOBE for educational resources that faculty can use to design learning experiences. |
